It does get a bit harsh in winter. The story behind the “sweaters” is that they are newly planted trees along a highway, wrapped to help them survive their first winter in harsh conditions.

Marike Schuurman, Schattendorf In northern Italy you will  find the shadow-village Viganella. From november till February, for 83  days long, the village is completely in the shadow of the surrounding  mountains. Since december 2006 there is a mirror on top of the mountain,  870 meters above the village. This motorized mirror of 8 x 5 meters  moves along with the sun and reflects the sunlight into the village. The  idea of the mirror is initiated by the previous mayor of Viganella,  Pierfranco Midali. Completed in cooperation with the architect Giacomo  Bonzani and the engineer Emilio Barlocco.v
