example of Chikan embroidery, India
The Chikankari or the Chikan embroidery got its birth from Lucknow during the reign of Wajad Ali the last ruler of the state. It was one of the many arts and crafts patronized by the people of Lucknow, which is white thread embroidery upon white cotton cloth. The Chikan embroidery uses variety of stitches to create different lace-like or monochromatic effects, areas that are opaque or transparent emphasized with bold or delicate details or outlines depending on the design. The designs of Chikankari are printed on the fabric with wooden blocks in a white or blue dye depending on the color of the cloth. The dye is washed off once the embroidery is complete, by people skilled in the technique.
